Can I reuse an old hard drive that I have to install in my recorder?

Power, yes it is possible; the SATA connection is the same. But a home computer hard drive is not designed to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The wear and tear it produces on a hard drive that is recording 24/7 can end up causing any hard drive that is not specific for video surveillance systems to fail.

How much recording time will I have on a hard drive of a certain capacity?

There are many variables to take into account. What resolution are the cameras, how many images per second are they recorded, what compression format do we use, or what bitrate do we work with? Will we record 24 hours a day, or only with motion detection?
